What is required to get fedora and get it installed on a usb 16 gig digital drive?

  2. thiha says:

    Hi,
I have installed opensuse + vista.
Last night i tried to install fedora.(I have used fedora 3,4 till 8)
After installing it,my opensuse is gone. There are only two os, fedora n vista.
I wonder why my opensuse’s boot is wiped out or overwritten?
I gave a clean partition for fedora’s boot partition.
Anyway thanks for the FREE os.

    Best,
    Thi Ha

  7. Chris says:

Fedora in my opinion is one of the best Linux Distros, it is still techie enough to be worth while…my only complaint is the lack of full fledged release notes on changes from previous releases… but it is awesome that a product so good is free.

  8. Mike says:

We’ve been using Fedora since Core 1. We’ve tried many flavours of Linux ranging from “true red” all the way to bastardized RedHat, aka Mandrake (eew!), and in the end Fedora has proven to be on track for our needs in both personal and business arenas. With a Wiley Bible in hand and the latest Fedora version loaded, we feel unstoppable. We’re very excited to use the current new release and hope to see many more in the future! Thanks to all the developers!

  9. Milan says:

wifi on my notebook not working (in ver.8 it worked), not supported .MP3 , selinux should be turned off someone want to use it,… I think this is still beta version.

  10. Adam Ward says:

I’m so ready for Fedora Core 9. I’ve used Fedora in the past (Back to Core 2) and I enjoyed it. I always viewed it as more of a desktop operating system. I’m really excited about the new features and especially the network manager. I’ll have to give this a try on my laptop!

  11. fleet says:

Hello,I am a fedora user from fedora core4 to fedora9 beta,
but for my bad computer and bad network connect,It make me feel boring about using fedora*,because it to slow for me,and really not easy to use if I could not connect the internet ,so I have to wait a new computer for fedora*,may be its the time for me to find a good job!

i am trying to start learn the fedora but i dont know where to start.is there any best way to get started

  16. Rahul Sundaram says:

    Bipin,

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Overview is a good place to start.

  17. Rahul Sundaram says:

    Chris,

“my only complaint is the lack of full fledged release notes on changes from previous releases…”

I don’t know any other distribution or even any other OS that provides more comprehensive release notes in as many languages as Fedora really. Refer

    http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/

We also update the release notes post-release in the website and also through the fedora-release-notes package in the distribution. If you have specific issues to address, your feedback on that is quite welcome. The release notes itself has information on the best way to do that.

hi i m using various linux distro’s from last two years and thinks that the fedora is best in them….
fedora 9 is yet another landmark in this way ….
thanks for giving such a nice distro…

  21. James says:

Hi, I am curious about linux operating sys. and, was wondering if it is possible to just run fedora 9 without having any other operating sys. previously installed on a computer.

  22. Rahul Sundaram says:

    James,

Yes you could. You can use for example, one of the live cd’s listed at http://get.fedoraproject.org and boot off it. The entire operating system runs off the cd and does not require anything preinstalled on the system.

If you do like it, it provides a desktop icon to install to hard disk too. Try it out and give us your feedback.

  23. Aaron says:

Hi, Love Fedora 9 os only thing is, I wish it supported more wireless drivers. My wireless card works on my laptop with Ubuntu but not with Fedora. I would rather be running Fedora all the time with the wireless card.

    Thanks Fedora team!

  24. Rahul Sundaram says:

    Aaron,

Have you filed a bug report in http://bugzilla.redhat.com?

Red Hat employs the upstream Linux kernel wireless subsystem maintainer and has always included the latest wireless bits in Fedora kernel. Unfortunately a number of distributions use proprietary drivers which can be a short term advantage for them but delays the long term work done in the Linux kernel. Fedora has chosen not to do that.

  25. desa says:

    Fedora is Awesome OS,
I have been using fedora 8 for the last 6 months with vista ultimate version. I really like Fedora than the bulky and buggy vista. I don’t know how to upgrade to fedora 9

Hi Fedora Team and Fedora lovers, I was using fedora for the past one year fedora core 6 and red hat 9 is my first free os. I’m feeling great and proud of using this FOSS Fedora. From fedora core 6 till fedora 9, the os is providing great features. In my usage, these OSes never hangs. And vista is just a copy of fedora linux. Use Fedora and save the nation!

  29. troy says:

Fedora is cool - I run Vista x64 and Fedora on my machine, love them both. But I mostly only play with Fedora and work in Vista. once .net support is huge, I will be all about linux!

  30. Ahmed says:

Hello, Fedora is an innovative Operating System. It has enabled people who can not afford to purchase a proprietary Operating System to use the latest Technology with resonable Hardware requirements and all of this is available for free. Such a noble work .

  31. Holytotemic says:

I have been using fedora for a couple years now and it it the prettiest, most functional, and user friendly distro out there. i have tried many others and they all let me down greatly. Fedora is the only linux distro i would use from now in. I cant wait to try fedora 9. keep up the amazing work.

I’m proud user of fedora, it serves me very well - with it’s pretty stable base, and with the feeling that is “in one piece” everytime. So thank you that made it again, I hope I can continue always the bug hunting - to in return get even more better and better Fedora Desktop. I always awaiting new artwork (without nice boring blueish theme), new icons, and possibility to get support for open hardware - like openmoko, or Fedora mobile… I hope that Fedora X will be the eXciting to reach the Infinity.

Ps: Why is an beta software like Firefox b5 are included to an stable release??

  34. Tim says:

Just 5 days before the release of Fedora 9.
I just decided to give up with Windows XP Pro and installed Fedora 8 using the Live CD. Worked a lot better than I expected. Feels like I just bought a new computer.
I am really excited about Fedora 9 but I will hold off until I have a more complete Desktop setup then I shall switch to 9.
I would like to thank you all that developed Fedora(s).
    Keep up the great work.
    Tim

  38. German G. R. says:

Hi, I am so excited about fedora 9,I started back on red hat 7 till fedora core 3,then I left for a couple years, came back to fedora 8,and since then,I had an obsession about the new fedora 9,now,I finally have it.It’s awesome. With all my stuff working.. Oracle 11g,Netbeans… , I’m just still dissapointed about the wireless drivers support.. I guess still have to use a cutter as I did in fedora 8.. and my ATI propetary driver is broken in fedora 9.(it was working on fedora 8) still trying to find out how to take it back online.the other bad thing is the absence of pirut.though packagekit might be better in the inside.I still feel that pirut was better as it gave you the option to edit the repos links, with packagekit I have to manually edit the repo files. anyways.. I’m more than happy with my sulphur running in my Dell Inspiron Laptop. ALso I would like to participate in Fedora’s development. But seems like you don;t need development guys(guess that you have enough volunteers).Couldn’t find any vacancy :-( . However..I appreciate everyone’s efforts to make it real. Fedora 9.. just a part of my life. Cheers Guys

  39. warezjoe says:

I can’t wait to kick the tires on Fedora 9. I’ve been a huge fedora fan for many years now. I hope some of the install problems that existed in F8 have been resolved. Thank you to all the developers that put their blood and energy into building this kick ass distro!

  40. Ahmad-2 says:

Fedora is the best distro to me .. it runs my ati card with no conflict .. no other distribution could even run it .. ((thanks fedora)) .. very nice work .. keep workin n im looking forward for everything new in GNU/Linux world

  41. Mohammad Farhan Husain says:

I installed Fedora 9 in my laptop. It is running great. The applications are great. I love the new Network Manager. However, I still have problem with wireless network connection. I used wpa_supplicant to connect to wireless network when I had Fedora 8. I could not use that successfully with Fedora 9 so far. However, I could connect to my school’s wireless network by Network Manager but it frequently gets disconnected. I could not connect to my home wireless network at all. But overall, Fedora 9 is great! I wish I could connect to wireless network everywhere with it!

  42. Eric says:

I’ve enjoyed using Fedora since Core 5 for PowerPC. It has been the best for me for providing up-to-date software packages through an easy download interface and provides the most robust hardware support on Mac PPC. It’s the only version my upgraded G4 tower would ever run! Ubuntu and openSUSE have both been less functional for me overall.

  43. Kamil says:

I’ve been using fedora since the release of fc3 and I’ve really enjoyed my fedora experience. Now I’m running fedora 8 on my hp dv6636nr laptop computer, to my full satisfaction.

I’ve seen fedora 9 and loved it, but I will not switch until nvidia releases new drivers with xorg 1.5 support.

Anyway, fedora is a really great system. Keep up the good work!

  44. Ali says:

    Dear All,

with all the copmments above sounds interesting

let you know how i get on

  46. God says:

As a linux user for nearly a decade, Fedora 9 is not that well polished, it is still very buggy and doesn’t work well. Debian based such as Ubuntu is a better bet. Debian is more refined. THe first thing after installation is full of errors. Fedora guys are you guys really sleeping, please release something that works not a trash piece.

  47. Colby Hoke says:

    Dear God,

Not sure what problems you’re running into. I’ve been using Fedora for a little while now and this is by far the best release I’ve seen come out. I’m running it on some old hardware from my early college days, an IBM ThinkPad X32 and a MacBook Pro as dual-boot. I’ve had no bugs, no installation worries, and no error messages. It just works.

Maybe you would like to file some errors and we can see what’s going on with your install. It’s just a step away to ask for help vs. trolling. I would love to know exactly what you’re running into and I’m sure the engineering team would love to hear as well.

    Feel free! http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugsAndFeatureRequests

I’m glad you’re happy with Ubuntu, but I can say, as someone who doesn’t know much about the ins and outs of Linux, I’m extremely happy with the new Fedora. And, yes, I’ve tried Ubuntu.

So, please please file a bug report and the Fedora community will get right on it. Trust me, it’ll even help you, as an Ubuntu user, in the long run. (Probably the short run, as well!)

    Cheers,
    Colby

  48. griff says:

I have been using Fedora/Red Hat since Red Hat 4.2. I have tried and used a few other distros (maybe ten), just for curiosity. But I have always embraced Fedora/Red Hat because of their stance on FOSS (Free Open Source Software) and usability. I was fairly disappointed with Fedora 8. But Fedora 9 is a VERY weak alpha release, I have un-installed it and returned to Fedora 8.

Those of you thinking of installing Fedora 9, my recommendation is DO NOT.

Red Hat I hope you are paying attention here because clearly the Fedora group is not.

  49. freund says:

I have been using redhat since 6 and all the through to fedora 9. I love selinux especially in my firewall/router, but had to switch to ubuntu because dansguardian was dated. I had a samba/print server that I switched to ubuntu at f7 because samba/cups/print driver didn’t work after an upgrade. fedora has always been bleeding edge on many fronts and a lot of packages are not easy accessible or not supported. The new package manager is convoluted in f9 and not as intuitive and easy to use as in ubuntu. I would say that the primary switch from fedora to ubuntu was a result of these two issues. I still have one fedora box left out of 7. Long Term Support would be great for servers you didn’t want to upgrade constantly also. On the bright side I tried the live CD on a notebook that had problems connecting WPA2 wireless router in ubuntu, and f9 connected so fast that I was surprised. Fedora is my first love and it will remain so. Keep up the good work.

  50. Booboo says:

I’ve been using Red Hat OS’s since RH version 7 ! then came along Fedora(Core) which also was great(my favorite was FC6) and then they got to version 9!
F9 stinks! It has a beta version kernel with a beta version Xorg and that KDE 4 in my opinion should be considered to be in alpha stage ! Why release such a thing ? From an optimistic point of view i think that all of this will be corrected in Fedora 10 ! I think that I’ll wait for about 6 months and then try again :) (till then Gnome will be screwed up to! who knows?)

  51. Booboo says:

    P.S.
Fedora 9 is a piece of thrash that looks great !

10 out of 10 points for the graphics team

  52. Sklav says:

WoW i guess trolling is in style again ;)

I have installed a test version of 9 and aside from a few issues mostly third party repo’s the base system itself is functioning flawlessly. My only issue that i had was with network manager, and that is easily solved.

So all in all great work guys, and continue innovating

  53. asdfjkl says:

Fedora is a poor distro. The terrible attitude of the maintainers and community members is what is keeping Fedora behind Ubuntu.

Go to the Fedora Forums and witness the countless numbers of unanswered and ignored posts. Fedora 8 was a crap distro and Fedora 9 will be no exception.

  54. asdfjkl says:

I can’t tell you how poor of a distro Fedora is. I have found Fedora 8 to be unstable as hell on numerous different machines with varying chipsets and hardware and the only thing that Fedora is good at is crashing and locking up.

It is by far the worst distro I have ever tried. In fact, I’m writing this post right now from a Fedora 8 box that is a total piece of junk.

  55. constrictor says:

I own a Hp tx1232la laptop. Hope this distro is more friendly than the ones before it. (Home Redhat user since RH8, had to chage to Ubuntu after I changed mi laptop.)

If anyone knows how to make the touchscreen work in Fedora 9, please email me to juanconstrictor@gmail.com with the solution .

I think one of the biggest problems that linux must take in charge is how to reach the home users that doesn´t have a developed tech knowledge, that for that reason uses windows.

  56. JBGZ says:

I use Red Hat software since Red hat 6, now i use Fedora 8 in my office pc, my laptop, my homepc and 2 servers..

I installed Fedora 9 just for test in a blank HDD but im not going to migrate until the video drivers are released… in the case of my homepc.. my servers and my office pc as well are being upgraded. I dont use visual effects there.. on the servers i dont use even graphical mode.. only text.

for me, i have used slackware (still old even the newst version), Debian (didnt like it, they copy alot of things from REd hat and i love Fedora.! i even have my sticker of Redhat and Fedora in my car ehehe…

    keep up the good work

  57. Pale Writer says:

Great 1st impression? About the 1st thing I did after installation of FC9 for the 1st time (after installing the almost-immediately suggested security updates) was to fire up Firefox to see if I could browse. Default page was here, offering the vid clip, which I tried to run. That failed, insisting that I needed a plugin and offering to install it. Turned out to be Adobe Flash something, which ended up failing its installation due to a source file being “malformed,” and suggesting that I whine at the vendor about it. I’m glad none of my MAC-loving acquaintances were watching - you know, the fudds that insist that everything they run “just works….” Oh well.
Maybe I should try something simple - like a simple text editor.

  58. Mike Cantu says:

i start using Unix since 1986 with DEC, but now with Fedora, and i dont know if somebody can imagine the great gift with this, i start using linux the first time when i get the floppy disks with the first version when i get those disks in Dec.1993, “uknw”

But really all this time was a great experience on all this years and i cant beleive that i was working with a 286 and 386 pc’s that times, is great that more people could access all this and more people explore more, create freely and freely developing. in the past i saw great rocks using UNix when i was young, and now i see in the sky starts as people experiencing this. this is a great part of the life living with this and sharing in a world where the Freely and the Money can sharing domains. but really, im specting more to arrive and every time most faster.
Congratulations i was one of the many that was connected day by day specting that realese the fedora9 to install .
great experience, i feel young .
    thanks .

  59. me says:

Awesome! Started up Firefox in my new Fedora installation. Wow, there’s a video from the project leader. Went to play. No dice, it’s Flash.

    WTF

Man I hate Linux companies that hate free/open source software. What an insult!!!

It’s a sign of extremely bad management that even the Fedora project doesn’t have faith in free software. Guess I won’t be using Fedora.

  60. Colby Hoke says:

I think you need to re-examine your definition of “free.” The Fedora project does not hate “free,” they dislike proprietary. SAme thing goes with wmv, mov, mp3, etc etc.

For something a little better and closer to “free,” try gnash to play your flash.

As long as you promote proprietary codecs and standards, you’ll never be truly free.

  61. AlinuxFF says:

Installed Fedora 9 and was annoyed that Mozilla defaulted to offline and it couldn’t attach to the network. However, just a quick read of this guide (for after installation) cleared up my problems. It is a great resource!

    http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f9.html

Fedora 9 managed to install in my Dell laptop - something my Fedora 8 couldn’t - so there is progress!

    Great effort Fedora 9 team

  62. Rodney says:

Always have and always will be using Fedora. Great distro, keep up the good work.

  63. forrest says:

My teacher and my brother name Muhammad Kamran he tells me about the linux first time and help me so much abt this we use fedora and this is really great OS as a FREE is helping the community to grwo.

  65. Matei says:

I am still new to Fedora. Been using it since FC6. I installed it on my laptop a few years ago dual booting with Windows XP. Ever since, I never booted XP again.

    All Windows users are heretic.

The only problem I’ve encountered with all Fedora releases is that my Creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook freezes my computer, wether it’s inserted at boot, before boot or during runtime..

  66. Mustafa says:

    Fedora Rulez!

  67. tokegee says:

My PC is old and I cannot use all functions and features of Fedora like BT, Wireless Networking and Live USB and so on. I like to use them. I’m sure that when I buy new PC, I will use Fedora on it. I have used Fedora since FC6 till 9. I really love Fedora and I’m still exiting what is new release and it’s look and feel in future.
Thank you very much indeed to all developers and testers and everyone who is improving Fedora.
    I love Fedora!! :-)

  68. Swapnil Borgaonkar says:

This is the first time I have installed Fedora. I mostly use Ubuntu. But this time i wanted a change. I hope fedora can fit in my space :)

  69. anonymous says:

    Ubuntu kicks Fedora’s ass!

  70. Astral says:

Fedora 9 is my first linux OS I am learning and found it to be absolutely great.
Thank you Redhat for making Fedora 9.

Once you use linux and learn a few basics you’ll never go back into the windows darkness.

  71. Michael says:

So, when I try to watch the video with gnash on my Fedora 9 system, nothing happens.

If I try to use, swfdec, I get a pop-up message saying that I can’t play it because Fedora only supports free formats and can’t provide the out-of-the-box support for proprietary videos like this one… then the codec buddy offers to install the fluendo package for me. But, the installation fails because I have to go to the web page and pay for it first…

Guess I’ll try again with Adobe?

  72. Michael says:

Yup, Adobe works great. Look, I don’t mean to be too negative, and in general I’m very happy with Fedora, but maybe a Flash video isn’t the best format for getting the word out, if you have to install proprietary software to view it. I realize there’s a download link, and the video is pretty cool with the old movie clips and everything, but still it seems like RedHat magazine should be able to come up with a format that a fresh install of F9 will support, especially if the video is going to be posted on the default home page in firefox.

  73. Rahul Sundaram says:

For everybody lamenting about Flash files, note that there is a link to a ogg file download for a good reason. So use that instead.

  77. Sergiy says:

Fedora 9 is the best linux I ever used. Using fedora/Redhat from RH 5.02 :)

I am impressed with that one. I have also tried SuSe & Ubuntu, but nothing can replace Fedora

  78. Murad says:

Fedora 9 id dam smart OS. i love it very much.

  79. FC4Linux says:

Fedora is great Linux distribution! It’s nice to see how Fedora community can tweak Operating System to be so fast and still get whole system to work so great! It is great to see that Fedora has got more bleeding edge what other distribution are afraid to use!

ps. OS is the thing what is between hardware and Applications/GUI. The system is not the OS ;)

  80. Curt Bean says:

I am a well seasoned Unix System Administrator / Programmer (30 + years) and have been using Red Hat thru Fedora-9 for various reasons. The first reason is at my home site where I need the best security I can get without having to try to stay ahead of the hackers. Fedora meets that challenge. Next reason is that there have been and still is special problems within my company (and previous company’s) that suddenly are faced with a problem that needs immediate attention and of course there is a limited budget. Linux and or Fedora has always came through and solved the problem. I have many more success story’s but this is not the place to share them in detail.

I have read the 79 comments and to those that are having problems, I suggest to ask for help from the Fedora group. It has been my experience that help is quick, and considerate, and you are not left hanging out there in hopes that you will go away.

Thanks to a great group of people (Linux and Fedora) that has made my job easier and of course more fun.

I want to use Fedora with Java for my AP Comp Science students. This way they can move from home to school with a familiar environment in which to work. I have installed Fedora 9 on a USB–It works great. I have installed Fedora 9 on a DVD–It works great. So how do I get the Java and our Gridworld Jar file loaded? I have tried to install Linux Java from the Fedora System command line on these media but I just get errors. I really would appreciate your help. This puts the programming power into the hands of all my students. EJ

  83. Sarah Kuhr says:

After reading these last 82 comments I just want to tell everyone that a lot of how any os works has to do with your hardware and your electricity. I live in Israel. I have friends all over the world. Windows systems tend to crash a lot in Israel and that is why there is a big effort to develop Linux here, not because it is free though that helps. Our power is 220 to 240, not 110 like America. We have power surges and brown outs a lot more than some other countries. The average mother board dies here with Windows in 2.5 to 3 years. Those nice little surge protectors burn out pretty fast here. Considering we make much less money than people in many other countries it is a big expense to replace or buy new. My friend in France tells me the situation is similar there. Linux in any form works better here though I don’t know why. I have this particular mother board for four years already using Linux for the last two. I have been using Ubuntu but my son the computer genius told me to try out openSUSE 10.3 and fedora core 9. He just installed Fedora 9 on his office computer and told me it is eye candy. But as I said he is a genius. I will check it out and tell you what I think from an old lady’s point of view as soon as I can. I like the idea of the usb nondestructive system though I can’t imagine it would work on all hardware. The other thing is that although the proprietary codecs are not going away so soon, the fact is that if we use more and more of the non-proprietary codes the manufacturers of hardware will have to make hardware to our needs. We see this a lot in Europe and the Middle East. If more people are using Linux eventually there will be Linux drivers for many hardware components and OGG players not just mp3 players. I don’t think it will be so far away either. A few letters to manufacturers also helps. About half of the printers available now have Linux drivers. Windows has had its day in the sun. Linux is growing because it is practical.

I have been using RedHat product since RedHat 7.2 as a free server solution, Rh8, Rh9 and i had a little unfortunate break and i had no idea about Fedora for a while since i moved and had not internet connection, and i was very surprised when 1 day accidentally i got FC3 and i am using Fedora since then both home and server use. On server side i don’t really see a good side since fedora releases too fast and it is hard to keep up, but for home use or even portable use with F9 now is perfect.

I have been using fedora since f3 and I must say that fedora is an excellent distro. I was using opensuse 10.3 just before I installed fedora 9, and wanted to get rid of it coz opensuse is very much windows-like. I have also used fedora 8 but it didnt have drivers for my webcam, had some problems with bluetooth and with f9 they are gone. Webcam works fine, and bluetooth too. I can use my webcam in linux now. fedora 9 really rocks!!!! keep up the gud work guys..

I tried both Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Fedora 9 in a Windows/Linux dual-boot set up on my Lenovo T61 laptop with the installation DVD.

Installation was straight forward for both distros but Sulphur wasn’t quite as easy as Hardy Heron.

Wireless capability has always lagged on Fedora and continues to do so with Fedora 9. However the Ubuntu release was less robust for my wired connection at work (automounter didn’t work with NIS) and I ended up sticking with Fedora 9 Sulphur. Finally, the colour scheme for Fedora is much nicer than the ugly browns you get with Ubuntu.

All in all Fedora 9 is an excellent release and continues to make progress in it’s traditionally weak areas of installation ease, wireless capability, and user friendliness. Keep up the good work!

I starting playing around with FC7 last year and really loved the fact the it just wasn’t Windows related in anyway. After running Vista for two weeks I repartitioned the drive and started using Ubuntu & FC7. Linux is much more stable.
I liked the fact that Linux is so flexible and Fedora stays current with the news technology within it’s releases.

For 5 yrs wore the Windows is the OS blinders. While they have been ripped off for a year now. Vista was such a terrible update that only use it when I have too.
Linux Distro’s like Fedora & Ubuntu really reinstate how bad Vista is. Please don’t stop what Redhat/Fedora are doing! I love Opensource solutions.

Thanks for your hard work guys.

  97. WareWolf says:

As a long time Open-Source supporter, I must point out that some of the previous comments focus too much on the look and feel when judging the distribution. I entirely agree with the comments posted by the developers to clear up any misunderstandings people have about the Fedora Project and Linux in general. On one of my computers (outdated Dell box) Fedora 7 and 8 (among previous versions) ran like a dream. Being one of the more stable and versatile systems, I enjoyed Fedora. However, the high expectations were not met by Fedora 9 as a desktop system. Even in the release, serious graphic problems and package manager problems arose. I’m not satisfied with the absence of Ext4 support during installation. I still prefer Fedora 8 over Ubuntu 8.04 due to functionality despite the reduced “user friendliness”. I will continue to use OpenSuSE 11 because I have not found a flaw which couldn’t be fixed within several minutes.

May the source be with you,
    WareWolf.

P.S. I’m tired of people referring to Linux as a “decent replacement of Windows”. Linux not only does everything Windows attempts to do, but does it better and more freely. (Freely in both ways). Thanks to all those who take Linux as a strong-standing community that will make the future a better place.

  98. TRON says:

We use Fedora 7 within our non-commercial organization for about 9-10 months after migrating from a different GNU/Linux distribution.

The System is mainly used as our SAMBA, HTTP and DNS Server within our local LAN. We’re partially students as well as employees. Since we rely on a sane relation of features and stability without the pain of raw installations like Slackware, Debian or Gentoo, Fedora is the best choice we ever did. (At first we were a bit frustrated because of RPM dependency problems occurring much to often ;-)

At the time of writing our server is going to be migrated from version 7 to 8 and already serves data for more than 20 client systems. One of the commentators in here said there’s a lack of “changelog” within the recent releases. I can confirm that. (The documentations from Fedora 7-9 we’ve read are excellent though!) The main reason for us not to migrate to version 9 is that we need to ensure the system is stable and tested enough.

Nevertheless we wanna say “Thank You!” to the whole Fedora team.

I do hope they do still keep power useer control access. thas what fedora shoudl be striving for and every linux distro, not just have a easy to use distro or a complicated distro but features and tools for both these users as shoudl all OS’s and should no exclude or be intended fro a specific group, dam if only I was teh project manager of all Linux distros, I woudl actually make wise decisiosn that woudl topple microsoft.

Well Fedora is great, sadly though soem of the fundemental programs such as the ones that mount and unmount usb drives floppies have the stupidesty ilogical settings, if they changed thsi then peopel would be less confused as why there data they have written disapears when they do not unmount manually, which is because it doesnt write the data in syncronised but in a syncronised, i dotn know why the makers of thsi program that fedora uses have left the default seetting in a stupid manner which serves no purpose, apart from that it is great. btu of course, theres also teh settings of hal daemon which arnt set out well, you have to change oit manually to install anythign from cd using wine, pretty much linux ditros and fedora woudl be much greater and would attract more people to it, if default settings for underlining programs were set by thoose who understand usability and logic and understands teh common, everyday , dumbed down user so that they wouldn’t be put of by having to manually change defautl settings on apps to values which they should be set to originally not that any dumbed down user woul dknow this, fedora is great but teh decisions made by many distros and by the creators of the underlinign apps that fedora rus are really killigns its popularity or ability o attract new crouds that are not just for the intermediate computer users.

Even more strange is that when I try to download the Flash plugin it is not possible for the sake of an error:
“Firefox could not install this item because “install-peg..rdf” (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist.
Please contact the author about this problem.”

You also should fresh up the installer you use (Anaconda), because I have the same (minor) problem after installing Fedora as THIHA:
“I have installed opensuse + vista.
Last night i tried to install fedora.(I have used fedora 3,4 till 8)
After installing it,my opensuse is gone. There are only two os, fedora n vista.

i have been using fedora 8 for about 6-7 months, and was eagerly awaiting the release of sulphur. i was also stoked at the fact that they decided to make a preupgrade package.
only problem was when i tried to upgrade afterwards, the fc9 img failed to initialize, botching my install. now i know i should have been smarter, backed up my data, thats my fault, but, it actually took 3 attempts to get this os to install properly.
i’m not even gonna mention my problems with flash, ati radeon hd, and pulseaudio, as everyone seems to be on about those subjects, and i would assume that the devs are gettin a little sore on that subject..
but what i will say, as a word of cautionary advice, is if you are not a tinkerer, and you just want it to work, stick with fc8.

Linux as packaged by Fedora generally matches my requirements of reliability and stability.

Why did I adopt Fedora since Core 4 ? Being an IT professional as a language support person, Fedora on my private PC enables me to support my company’s Red Hat customers as well as in some extent support my company’s Unix supported operating systems.

However, I would NOT advise Fedora to non-Linux deeply skilled people.

What I would expect from Fedora is less use of interpreted languages (Python) to more use of compiled languages for performances and energy saving reasons.

We do only graphics when it has a relation with the goal of the lesson or the teaching.
All the systems pc run windows either win2k or xp
Since 1999 I have regularly tried to bring linux in the class room to teach some programming C, C++, Java and perl. As long as we were using the machine without a graphical desktop they worked well. Then when graphical desktop became available we did try to look at them.
Until now, only SUSE v10, 10.3 and 11 are working mostly efficiently. All the other distributions are, and I cite the students, ‘TRASH’
I just had this past week end brought the Fedora 9 and this is a winner in term of uselesness.
We could not get the network working, it would not recognize the Nvidia 8600 GT, we lost the home partition at the 5th booting, and now the root password does not work anymore…
I want to congratulate you or whoever deals with publishing linux for the senseless work done to destroy what could be a reall great OS
Sincerely sorry and the students are more than ever looking for Vista and Mac.

Another option is to make it a part of the installation, since users install these packets any way.

Fedora is just another one, but I always felt sympathy for that stuff from Red Hat / Fedora. I encourage everyone to make experiences on your own.

  144. David Phillips says:

I have been a Linux user since RH 6.1. I also started using fedora when the switch was made.

I have this Acer Aspire 5100 and it came with XP but had a Vista upgrade. I installed the upgrade and tweaked the new OS to it full potential.

Recently I just got disgusted with Windows again and decided that I could once again do without it on this machine as I have already done on my others.

I started looking around and tried Ubuntu’s newest release, 8.04. I can’t really say it had a problem with most of the stuff I tried to do except the handling of my USB cell phone modem which seems pretty straight forward to connect to ttyUSB0 and dial in. It turns out that it would work fine one time and then not the next having to sudo my way around creating different symlinks and unplugging / replugging the modem. After looking at the advise of Ubuntu forums and finding that the card reader had to ejected and all sorts of crazy work arounds I was completely unsatisfied with the lack of support. Finally after getting tired of the clumsy way of doing it switching to GPPP for the dialer made it successful at last. Also running ’sudo passwd root’ finally enabled ’su -’.

After two days of playing around with the ins and outs of Ubuntu all I can say is that it works fine for a desktop system. I was going to build an ARM kernel for my phone but it’s just was not going to happen.

I am currently writing this on my Acer Aspire 5100 running Fedora 9. There is something familiar about it to me. It works great too. Plugged in my USB720 and created the dialup connection in the Network Manager. Now it’s simply a matter of right clicking on the Network Manager Icon and selecting the CDMA network connection. The Micro SD card reader on it works as well.

    Keep up the great work.
