I am not a programmer but I do like the idea of open standards so I have been following this process with the ISO and OOXML for a while. I never expected OOXML to be accepted. I read that documentation consisted of 1,000's of pages while ODF had very few pages. If someone like me can understand the need for a standard that is well documented and opened, why can't these experts? Someone needs to call these people and have them explain things.

This makes me wonder if this is Microsoft's new approach to being friendlier with Open Source. I don't see how creating your own "standard" and then ram rodding it through the process is being friendly, but as things progress I'm sure that's how it will be spun.

LOL!

ISO = I Sold Out

Seriously though, having two standards creates unnecessary extra workload, and often causes more problems than it solves.

As in the case with Imperial and Metric units of measurement...Which almost led to an air disaster.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider

What we do see though, is what Microsoft is willing to do to get their way. (This is at a worldwide level!). I won't stand for this behaviour and nor should you. As such, I'm not going to accept or send any documents in OOXML.

Fear not, some governments are ignoring the insanity of the ISO debacle and pushing on with common-sense decisions:

Brazil once again are leading the world in the adoption of sensible standards.

IMHO, this has completely destroyed any credibility that ISO might have had. I believe that it's time to find another solution to establishing standards.

ISO == The best standards that money can buy.
