Friday roundup

by the editorial team

For Friday fun, here’s a look at what we’ve been reading on the interwebs this week. Doom, Second Life, outer space, Star Wars. Geek out along with us.

Movie OS comes to life

Remember the scenes in movies like Tron or Sneakers where hackers navigate a series of 3D-game-like interfaces that help them infiltrate the network(s) of their choice? Remember scoffing at those unrealistic “movie OS” representations of systems administration? Scoff no more! What if adminning boxes were more like playing Doom? How about your web stats visualized as a crowd of avatars? Sometimes, you don’t have to fight the future… but just wait for it. [ source: Advertising Lab ]

Some people play baseball; we play Second Baseball

While some of you were getting excited over the World Series, other folks were more concerned with a different sort of statistics: the ones about users in Second Life. But these statistics folks are called the Yankee Group, and even we geeks know the Yankees aren’t in the World Series this year. I’m killing this baseball/statistics analogy. Sorry. I’ll take my ball and go home now.

Spaced out shutterbugs

BoingBoing has posted a few times lately about DIY space photography. If you’re interested in the process, check out Project W.A.R.P.E.D. They’re just starting and blogging the whole way.

What do you get when you cross Boba Fett with Jabba the Hutt?

In the spirit of Overheard in New York, we’re initiating “overheard in the office” posts. Feel free to add your own in the comments. The clear winner this week:

One of our own editors made a Star Wars reference. Another Red Hatter (who has asked to be referred to as Neville Longbottom rather than by name) replied, “I watched the first movie, but I couldn’t figure out what Bubba Fat was saying.”

We can’t believe the Spaceballs franchise hasn’t used that one yet.
