Is it possible to make compatible http://exist.sourceforge.net/ with the data storage of ODF?

I am very glad that ODF is here and now an approved standard. I have been trying to get customers to adopt open standards for nearly 15 years with moderate success. I am very happy that the open standard discussion finally reached critical mass and that discussions like this are happening (I tried in 1999-2000).

We MUST prevent a digital "Tower of Babble" where data becomes non-sharable or inaccessible because of closed, licensed formats by vendors that no longer exist or refuse to provide details on the formats. I have seen this time and time again.

Remember, it is in the best interest of companies to keep the formats closed/proprietary as one must use that company's services, software, and even hardware to access the data. Why should you keep paying to access your OWN data? This is especially critical in the public sector!

Another little recognized boon for ODF is its adoption by several online word processors already. For general, non-professional use, ODF will dominate that "platform" if I can use that inaccurate term. For document sharing, ODF is a natural.

A useful summary by Michael Pittman.

I enjoy seeing my memes re-circulating.

Now if we can get Sun/OASIS to accept true interoperability at the spec level between ODF/ODF-ready apps and the Microsoft formats & apps, then ODF might be synonymous with the Universal, Portable Document Format.

I afraid it's far from it in its present condition.

(Which is to say nothing of OOXML -- scourge & shame of this industry!)
