Why the Summit will make you think

by Julie Bryce

At the Red Hat Summit, you’ll learn about technology that’s changing business and changing the world. Challenge yourself with new ideas and new ways of thinking about old problems. And discuss ideas with your peers and session leaders, experts who know these topics well.

Here’s a sampling of the innovative and provocative sessions at this year’s Summit:

Virtualization Food Fight
led by Rik van Riel
There are about a dozen virtualization technologies for Linux, some of which are trying to become the defacto virtualization standard for Linux users everywhere. However, Xen, KVM, lguest, UML and Open VZ are all very different technologies. This presentation compares these technologies, explains the underlying principles and predicts what might get adopted into the upstream Linux kernel.

One Laptop per Child
led by Chris Blizzard
This session will provide an update on One Laptop per Child, a global education initiative designed to put low cost computing devices in the hands of K-12 students around the world. Get an overview of the project and Red Hat’s involvement, followed by a discussion of some of the challenges faced implementing a novel open source user environment on a specialized device designed for low cost and high durability.

Online Services and the Modern Client
led by Havoc Pennington
From Flickr and MySpace to blogs and RSS, online services are at the core of the modern desktop user experience. Is it time to rethink the desktop in terms of people and their activities instead of documents and applications? This talk will explore the intersection of open source clients and online services, drawing on experiences from the Mugshot project.
